Freesia Study

 "Freesia Study"
Oil on Stretched Canvas

Here's a pic of the setup in my studio.  As you can see, the camera doesn't catch the warm vs cool that's going on in the painting.  This is one reason why many artists prefer to work from life.  When painted from life, the colors in the painting will be more authentic, especially in the shadows.  Camera's tend to darken shadows, and cause them to look more gray.  There are so many vibrant colors in shadows that can really add to the realism of a painting.  You can also see that the whites are blown out here too.  If I were better at photography I might have better reference, but the point is if it's possible, work from life.  If I find that I may not have time to finish a painting before the light changes, I try to get the colors correct.  Then I take a photo and work from that later to finish out the details.

Salt Lake City LDS Temple

Salt Lake City Temple
(fountain view)
Oil on Canvas, 24x12 inches

The temples in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are very symbolic. They symbolize the eternal nature of family relationships.  They are considered holy places wherein church members can grow closer to God and serve others.  It is a peaceful happy place of order and balance.

This painting is an exercise in balance between structure vs. nature.  We have the well-structured architecture of the temple in the mid-ground, surrounded by two amorphous shapes in the background clouds, and foreground fountain.  All of these shapes seem to be pointing heaven-ward, just as the temple helps people to point their thoughts and lives to a higher level.

Heber Farm

Heber Farm
Oil on Masonite, 9x12 inches
Framed, (17.5x14.5 inches)
This is a framed plein air painting, which means it was painted on location near this barn in Heber, UT.  It was a bright and sunny day and I had a blast doing this painting.  There was an old man who lived nearby, who saw me out there with my easel and decided to give me a little company.  That's the best part about plein air painting. . . the curious people you meet in the process.

A Friendly Danish Forest

Danish Memory
Oil on Canvas Panel, 9x12 inches

This Danish landscape is from memory.  I strive to make my way back to Dyrehaven every time I go to Europe, purely because of the way it transports me to the peaceful, simple, and the adventurous now.  Dyrehaven is a forest just outside of Copenhagen, with deer wandering throughout, and although mostly untamed, its still easy to navigate and stroll through.  There's something inviting about nature, as it beckons us to see what is around the next bend or over the next hilltop. . . here's a pleasant reminder of that feeling.
