Here's a pic of the setup in my studio. As you can see, the camera doesn't catch the warm vs cool that's going on in the painting. This is one reason why many artists prefer to work from life. When painted from life, the colors in the painting will be more authentic, especially in the shadows. Camera's tend to darken shadows, and cause them to look more gray. There are so many vibrant colors in shadows that can really add to the realism of a painting. You can also see that the whites are blown out here too. If I were better at photography I might have better reference, but the point is if it's possible, work from life. If I find that I may not have time to finish a painting before the light changes, I try to get the colors correct. Then I take a photo and work from that later to finish out the details.
